Tokyo Ghoul's Most Painful Scene 'Helped Me Train' for Next Job Says Anime's Main Star (2024)

Back in 2014, Pierrot's classic supernatural horror series, Tokyo Ghoul, introduced anime fans to the terrifying universe of Sui Ishida's titular manga. While reflecting on his time with the series, Tokyo Ghoul voice star Hanae Natsuki explained how completing the show's "painful" scenes motivated him when preparing for other roles.

Per Mantan Web, Natsuki and Tokyo Ghoul co-star Sora Amamiya were both present at Tokyo Ghoul EX -- a public exhibition designed to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tokyo Ghoul anime. While discussing the work with exhibition host and comedy star Inoue Yusuke, Natsuki was asked which scene left the "strongest impression" on him. "In the final episode of the first season, there is a scene where [Ken] Kaneki is tortured by Yamori and wakes up, and it's a painful scene where he keeps crying and screaming, so it's still memorable to me," replied Natsuki.

Natsuki recalled how this torture scene was not only "painful" for his character but also for him personally -- so much so that subsequent roles seemed easier by comparison. "Even when I had a difficult job after that, I was supported by the thought, 'Tokyo Ghoul was harder, wasn't it?' and it helped me train," he explained. Sora Amamiya, who plays Touka Kirishima in the series, also had some initial trouble adjusting to her role. "When I was first creating the character, it was really difficult because I had to act in a lower voice that I had ever used before," she said. "I started out with anxiety about whether I could carry through the role."

The story of Tokyo Ghoul begins when bookish college student Ken Kaneki meets Rize, a girl his age who shares many of his interests. However, Rize turns out to be a "ghoul" -- a creature that survives by hunting and eating human beings. At one point, Rize transfers part of her body into Kaneki. Now a ghoul himself, Kaneki must learn how to navigate life in his new form. The aforementioned Yamori is the founder of a hierarchical ghoul gang known as the "White Suits," which tortures Kaneki to learn more about his body's physical limits. The anime adaptation currently consists of three total seasons, the most recent of which concluded in December 2018. Since the series' completion, Natsuki has taken on a number of other prominent anime roles, including Falco Grice from Attack on Titan and Tanjiro Kamado from Demon Slayer.
