Magicseaweed has officially joined Surfline, bringing together the world's best surf forecasting websites. As part of this, we've now brought over a bunch of features on Surfline that will look and feel similar to MSW.

Global surf forecasting firm Magic Seaweed (MSW) has announced it is losing its name as it merges with California-based Surfline. MSW, which was created in Kingsbridge, south Devon in 2002, was bought by Surfline in 2017.

We have taken the liberty of compiling a grieving playlist. We knew this day would come. That doesn't make it any less painful. As of today, Magicseaweed — a surf forecasting platform cherished by many around the world — has passed on.

MagicSeaweed was acquired along with Stab Magazine on 22nd May 2015 for a combined total cash consideration of AUD$13.8 million and 4.8 million shares in SurfStitch. The new buyers of MagicSeaweed are US-based surf forecasting site Surfline.

Tide and Surfing

If the tide is too high and rising, each successive wave will push higher, while if the tide is high and falling, the energy in the waves will decrease with each wave. As the tide approaches low tide, the waves will be less powerful and flat.

Are 2 ft waves surfable? ›

Generally speaking the perfect size for beginners is 1 to 2ft. For intermediates: 2-4ft waves are best as it gives you more face of the wave to progress your skills on. You should keep an eye on the 'Swell Period', because it's a lot more indicative of the actual wave size (see the next point).

As long as the wind doesn't get too strong, say over 20 knots, you'll be fine. Any stronger and it will be hard to take-off. The other winds are either onshore – from the sea to the land, or cross-shore – blowing from either side. If these winds are blowing any stronger than 10 knots it can chop the waves up fast.

Not necessarily — it depends on where you plan to surf. High tides are great if you're headed towards a reef break. The only exception is if it's near a bluff, in which case the waves rarely break before hitting land. Conversely, medium to low tides are better if you're surfing near a beach break.

Surfline has acquired surf forecasting competitor Magicseaweed, the company announced this morning. Surfline acquired Magicseaweed from Australia-based SurfStitch Group, which is going through a process similar to bankruptcy restructuring and is selling certain company assets.
